WATCH: JAMES McAVOY IS A CREEPY 9 YEAR OLD IN M.NIGHT SHYAMALAN'S 'SPLIT' TRAILER

M. Night Shyamalan takes your average kidnapping to a whole new level in his upcoming thriller, Split. 

The trailer opens with The Witch star, Anya Taylor-Joy, and two other terrified teenage girls being locked up by Kevin (James McAvoy), a man with 23 different personalities. What ensues is a desperate attempt to escape before Kevin’s final, most sinister, form – the beast – manifests itself.

Split appears to be a showcase for McAvoy, who brings to life Kevin’s multiple personalities. My hopes for the movie are that each of these personalities will be given meaningful screen time and that the plot will be as layered, complex and thrilling as the trailer suggests it will be.

Conveying the right amount of claustrophobia and paralysing fear, the trailer for Split actually has me excited about being scared. After a fairly inconsistent movie portfolio, M. Night Shyamalan might be bringing us a good movie this go round. 

Split will hit cinemas 20 January 2017.
