From its humble beginnings as a Mattel toy line, the lovechild of Tron and Iron Man has finally become a movie. But has the wait for Max Steel been worth it?

Max Steel

Max Steel follows the adventures of teenager Max McGrath (Ben Winchell) through his first high school crush, a missing daddy-related identity crisis and the discovery of energy-bending superpowers. You know, the usual. Along with a poorly-introduced and ridiculously annoying flying alien companion, Steel (voiced by Josh Brener), Max learns to harness these powers to defeat some (also poorly introduced) alien force.

I think it goes without saying that I’m really not a fan of how loose the backstories of some of the really important characters seems to be. They definitely aren’t arbitrary, but I just don’t think the broader universe has been well thought out. Even the love interest seems like she was just put in for the sake of ticking that box on the ‘How to make a superhero movie’ guide.

Max Steel’s saving grace is that it looks EPIC! Despite the suit being a total rip-off of Iron Man’s, there’s real potential for some awesome effects to be employed. Energy-bending isn’t one of your traditional superpowers, giving Paramount lots of room to get creative.

Despite my issues with the storyline itself, I’m actually looking forward to checking this out. Max Steel is an ambitious prospect and I wouldn’t be surprised if flying robot companions become the next big thing.

Max Steel is set to hit theatres 14 October.
