LISTEN: THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS RETURN WITH 'DARK NECESSITIES'

LISTEN: THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS RETURN WITH 'DARK NECESSITIES'

After five years since their last album, ‘Dark Necessities’ is the first sign of new music from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

‘Dark Necessities' isn’t instantly recognisable as a Chili Pepper’s track. It opens up with some quick guitar strumming and a bit of piano, but as soon as Flea’s bass kicks in, the boys are back. Kiedis’ vocals are instantly recognisable and as smooth as ever.

The new sounds and effects incorporated throughout the tune lend it an alternative sound. But where are the drums? And California references?

It’ll be interesting to see if their new approach to music is continued throughout the rest of the album or whether we’ll hear more of the American rock we’ve come to love.

The guitar riff playing out below the tune is catchy, however the beat feels at odds with the actual lyrics. The chorus isn't quite as catchy as you would expect from the Chili Peppers, but it appears a mark of growth more than anything else .

‘Dark Necessities’ is a solid return to music after five years since I'm With You, but definitely hoping for more ‘Dani California’ and actual drums from the rest of the album.

The Getaway drops June 17.
